36 4. 5 x 104 cfu of G. roseum per g root (Fig. 1) while, significantly higher (about 25 x) cfu counts per g root was recovered from the proximal root segments. No colonies of G. roseum were recovered from roots of the control plants. Agar plates containing dilutions of washings from roots grown in field soil were heavily contaminated with Pencillium and Cladosporium which masked the colonies of G. roseum at the lower dilutions. Only at dilutions of 10-3 and 2xlO-4 was it possible to differentiate colonies of G.

Most of the conidia of T3 and G2 were still viable after 64 days. This indicate that conidia of T3 and G2 are able to survive for a long period in sphagnum peat. But most of the germination took place during a short period after incorporation, and a high level of germination only occurred in steamed sphagnum peat. In unsteamed sphagnum peat only a small percentage of the conidia germinated. Although scattered swelling occured, germination and formation of conidia seemed to take place at any time during the 64 days and this had no detectable influence on the cfu.

Affine roots were collected 4 days after inoculation with P. 9% of the non-diseased roots (Table 2). When the roots were collected after 3 weeks, P. oligandrum was detected on 415 out of 1440 one cm long root segments. P. oligandrum was detected on root segments on all the 10 diseased plants, but only on root segments of 4 of the actively growing plants. Cress roots were collected at 64 hours and 7 days following addition of P. oligandrum cysts to the soil. P. oligandrum did not grow out from neither P.
