The contingency theory and Mintzberg's typology of organizations, which are based on these concepts, are used to describe the structure and behaviour of the organizations. Following this, the systems theory of control is introduced, based on the paradigm of control as defined by De Leeuw (1990). In the succeeding paragraph a description of the three strata, universities, institutes and companies is given. This chapter ends with a general overview of the relative strengths of the different system variables in the strata, based on the theoretical considerations presented.
