Before that, however, we need to understand and recognize the partisan interests and values that underpin international society today. Failure to do so will perpetuate perceptions of'imperial globalization' in many parts of the world and ferment opposition to international society in the form of either 'civic' or—worryingly—'apocalyptic' globalization. The final four chapters each deal with this question of the failure of contemporary international society to create consensual solidarism and address some of the dangers that this creates.

The purpose of this chapter is to outline and assess leading English School writers' contributions to theory in the study of world politics. To this end, I wish first to explain what in my view 'theory' is. Primarily, there are three kinds. A first of the three maybe called explanatory theory. This aims to help us understand better how it is that the realm of world politics works out the ways it appears to do. A second may be called a normative theory. This elucidates the steps through which some fundamental normative presuppositions lead to conclusions regarding what should be done in world politics.

What Wight has done, however, is to exhibit a collection of specimens of Western international thought and classify them into three types, Realism, Rationalism, and Revolutionism. It may be said that 'international theory', in Wight's sense, is the name of his subject matter, and not the name of his mode of engagement with that subject matter, which is basically taxonomic. 11 What, we may ask, was this painstaking collection and meticulous classification for? There were, according to Wight, two conscious aims on his part.
